Healthy Cereal Recipe Roundup

I LOVE cereal- like Seinfeld obsessed with cereal. I could have 15 boxes in my house at any given time. My kids like cereal as snacks, even my 16-year-old son has a bowl of cereal before bed every night. March 7th is National Cereal Day! Apparently, it was created to commemorate the anniversary of the invention of corn flakes by William and John Kellogg in the late 19th century. Fine with me, I don’t need an excuse to celebrate my devotion to cereal. While I am a total breakfast lover (it’s absolutely my favorite meal), cereal can be enjoyed in an infinite number of ways at any time of the day.

How to choose a healthy cereal:

I do have some personal criteria for choosing a cereal and my clients are always asking for some suggestions on navigating the cereal aisle. My guidelines are pretty simple:
1. Contains mostly whole grains with the first ingredient as whole grain wheat, oats, kamut, quinoa, sorghum etc.
2. Contains less than 6 grams of sugar per serving – usually ¾-1 cup. This is where it falls apart a lot of the time. Anything with “clusters” usually packs a fair amount of sugar even though they may seem like a wholesome choice.
3. Contains at least 3 grams of fiber per serving, preferably more.
4. No artificial food dyes, period. It’s a pretty good sign of an unhealthy cereal. And beware for “healthy” appearing cereals that are not bright blue. Life cereal contains food dyes. Yes, Mikey, there’s yellow 5 and yellow 6 in your favorite cereal.
