This Spiced Apple Martini is made with siggi’s creamy Icelandic style skyr strained yogurt for a protein packed Thanksgiving, Christmas or holiday party cocktail.
With November and December holidays quickly approaching, it’s a perfect time to start testing out winter cocktails. I’m generally not a big drinker- too many calories to burn off on a regular basis. However, I LOVE holiday themed drinks to add some extra festivity to Thanksgiving and other holiday parties. When this siggi’s recipe contest came along via the Recipe Redux, I knew exactly what I wanted to make.
I’m already a siggi’s fan. I’ve had the privilege of meeting THE Siggi Hilmarsson several times at dietitian conferences and media events, and enjoyed hearing his personal story. When Siggi moved from Iceland to the US, he found that the yogurts on supermarket shelves were much too sweet and artificial for his liking. He was homesick for the yogurt of his childhood, skyr (pronounced skeer), a strained yogurt that has been a staple in the Icelandic diet for more than 1,000 years. Siggi first recreated skyr in his own New York City kitchen in 2004 and now we are fortunate to be able to purchase his wonderful products in our supermarkets.
siggi’s yogurt is different because it’s made from simple ingredients and not a lot of sugar. Every cup contains more protein than sugar, a pretty rare find in the grocery store. That’s enough to make me love the brand, but also fantastic is the array of unique flavors. My three favorites are Orange & Ginger, Pumpkin & Spice and Spiced Apple.
SO, I decided to whip up a Spiced Apple Martini or “Siggi’s Appletini” featuring siggi’s Spiced Apple yogurt. Not only does this cocktail scream of holiday cheer, it’s less sweet than most mixed drinks and packed with protein (something almost NEVER found in alcoholic drinks). That means it’s really satisfying and should help fill you up instead of giving you the munchies like many mixed drinks. Protein + booze= a winning combo. Feel free to play with the level of sweetness in this recipe. I don’t love super sweet things so you may feel the need to add some honey or other sweetener of choice.
Disclosure: By posting this recipe I am entering a recipe contest sponsored by siggi’s yogurt and am eligible to win prizes associated with the contest. I was not compensated for my time.
- 2 Tablespoons vodka
- 1 Tablespoon spiced rum
- 3 Tablespoons apple cider
- 1 container siggi’s Spiced Apple yogurt
- 4 ice cubes
- (optional packet of sweetener of choice or 2 teaspoons honey)
- cinnamon for garnish
- Add all ingredients into a blender and process until ice is crushed.
- Pour into a chilled martini glass and sprinkle with cinnamon.
Since everyone's sweet tooth varies, I recommend blending the drink, taking a small taste and adjusting the sweetness according to your preferences.
