Show your favorite guy some love by making him a tasty meal from this Men’s Health Month Recipe Roundup!
June is Men’s Health Month and I asked my fellow registered dietitian food bloggers to contribute their favorite tasty dishes for my Men’s Health Month Recipe Roundup. While there are any number of ways we can keep the men in our lives healthier, we are focusing on dishes that contain lycopene.
What’s lycopene? It’s a carotenoid, which is a natural pigment found in certain plants, fruits and veggies. While tomatoes are the most commonly thought of food when it comes to lycopene, it’s also found in watermelon, guavas, pink grapefruit, apricots and papayas.
My friends at the Tomato Products Wellness Council shared some really great scientific tidbits with me about the benefits of lycopene for men’s health:
*Tomato products contain a symphony of nutrients that work together to help fight prostate cancer: vitamins A and C, fiber, potassium, and carotenoids—such as lycopene, which is particularly promising in the fight against cancer. It seems that these nutrients are more powerful in the whole food, rather than as isolated nutrients, according to research.
*Tomato products account for 80% of the lycopene in the US diet—and it is more available to the body in cooked or processed tomatoes than fresh.
*A number of studies have found that eating tomato products regularly can help protect against prostate cancer. One meta-analysis of 11 case-control studies and 10 cohort studies found that those with high intakes of cooked tomato products had a 19% lower risk of prostate cancer.
*The AICR’s (American Institute for Cancer Research) comprehensive report on cancer and diet indicates that there is convincing evidence for a decreased risk of prostate cancer by consuming lycopene-rich foods.
*The NIH (National Institutes of Health) has funded further research exploring how tomato nutrients may help protect against prostate cancer.
*Tomato products are popular, healthy, delicious, and economical—they fit into some of the most popular foods across many cultures, including pasta dishes, pizza, chili, tacos, and curries.
